Overview:

NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk was first commissioned in 1919 as a Naval Supply Station. It was established to answer the need for a centrally located supply point on the East Coast. In 1919, station facilities consisted of two permanent buildings, five temporary warehouses, and one wooden merchandise pier.

Just eight years after it was established, in 1927, its assigned functions had grown to such an extent that the station was officially re-designated a Naval Supply Depot. The depot consisted of 10 warehouses, five permanent and five temporary, a fuel oil station and two wooden piers.

Over the next two decades, the depot changed with the times as it responded to world crises. The supply depot added Craney Island in 1938 and the South Annex in 1941. In 1939, when the President declared a national emergency, there were seven officers and 422 civilians working at the depot. In the succeeding war years, the staffing increased to a peak of 1,450 military personnel and 10,500 civilians and the facilities of the depot were greatly expanded to meet the increased workload.

Responding to the pressures of World War II, the headquarters building, W 143, was rapidly constructed in 1942. In 1943, Cheatham Annex (near Williamsburg) was added, increasing the supply depot's holdings by nearly 2,800 acres. In 1948, the Navy's largest, most complete supply point was officially established as a Naval Supply Center when the Naval Supply Depot consolidated all supply activities and related functions located within the confines of the Norfolk Naval Station.

On March 16, 1992, in a cost saving move, DoD accelerated its planned transfer of warehousing operations to the Defense Logistics Agency. The Defense Distribution Depot Norfolk, Va., (DDNV) assumed warehouse operations responsibilities while NSC Norfolk continued to perform consumer inventory management, regional procurement, financial services, personal property management, water freight transportation, fueling operations, and customer operations in support of Navy customers. On March 1, 1993, all Naval Supply Centers and Naval Supply Depots were renamed Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers. On July 1, 2011 the name changed to NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk to represent a new era in support and service to fleet units and the industrial establishment.

Today, NAVSUP FLC Norfolk, a command under Commander, NAVSUP Global Logistics Support, provides logistics to many partners around the globe as the Navy changes to meet operational challenges and fiscal realignment. Our mission remains to provide logistics support for all naval shore installations east of the Mississippi River and all Atlantic Fleet units. With 39 locations from Crane, Indiana to Brunswick, Maine, NAVSUP FLC Norfolk’s 90 years at its present headquartered location, it qualifies as a permanent Tidewater landmark and is the Navy’s largest and oldest supply center.
