Mission: Inspect, investigate, or inquire into any and all matters of importance to the Navy.
Role: The Inspector General (IG) is a confidential adviser and impartial factfinder for the NAVSUP Commander (also known as a directing authority).
Guiding Principles: Support the NAVSUP Commander and Enterprise leadership in maintaining the highest level of integrity and public confidence.
Key IG Functions: IGs function as the "eyes and ears" of the commander to assess the overall readiness, discipline, and efficiency of a command. The four primary duties include:
Who may file an IG complaint? Anyone, including civilians with no military affiliation, may file an IG complaint. If you have a concern or are unsure if you should file a complaint, contact your local IG office for guidance. However, many complaints (e.g., discrimination, sexual harassment, and conditions of employment) must be addressed by agencies other than the IG that have already established avenues of redress. We recommend that you consult DOW and DON IG websites to determine what complaints may or may not be IG-appropriate.
When are IG complaints appropriate? Individuals should attempt to resolve issues and personal complaints at the lowest possible level, using the chain of command, before contacting the Office of the Inspector General. The chain of command is usually the best option to address issues if given the opportunity to know about your issue/complaint. Complaints must be filed promptly with the IG, chain of command, or other grievance channels. The IG may dismiss a complaint if there is no fraud, waste, or abuse; no identifiable wrongdoing; no violation of law, regulation, or policy; or the complaint is not considered timely.
Where should complaints be filed? Complaints can be filed with DOW IG, DON IG, or NAVSUP IG. A complaint should always be filed with the lowest level IG. If your complaint needs to be transferred to another agency/IG, the lower-level IG can identify who needs to address your complaint. In many cases (not all), a complaint filed with DOW or DON IG will be transferred to the NAVSUP IG for complaint review and action. You have the right to file a complaint with DOW or DON IG and should consult those IG websites to determine how to file complaints with those agencies.
Will my complaint be confidential? Those who ask for IG assistance, make a complaint, provide evidence, contact or assist an IG during an inspection or investigation, or otherwise interact with an IG, often have an expectation of confidentiality. This expectation encompasses safeguarding their identity and the nature of their contact with the IG, and protection against reprisal. The IG has a duty to protect confidentiality to the maximum extent possible. While the need for confidentiality and the measures necessary to protect it vary with the circumstances, the IG always gives this issue priority attention. However, it is important to remember that, while confidentiality is a priority with the IG, it cannot be guaranteed.
